The Libyan Quantum Impact; 2022 Recap
The Libyan quantum community has seen remarkable development over the past few years. The community has seen growth in both the number of members and their level of engagement. Since the launch of OneQuantum Libya and QLibya, the platforms become a hub for community to share ideas, collaborate and network. On the other side, we have created opportunities for the community to be connected to their wider network of colleagues and peers across the MENA region and beyond.
Today, the community several active working efforts focused on community outreach and training; networking and outreach; technical discussions; research efforts and educational events. More than 300 enthusiasts from the community actively participated in these events where they have expressed their interest to advancing the field of quantum technologies in Libya. They also discussed ways of strengthening collaborations between industries & government organizations and how technology can help to build a strong national ecosystem.
Historically, quantum technologies has had a marginal presence in Libya due to the lack of accessible information and training resources. However, in 2022, with all of the efforts done, there have been growing signs that the community is making progress toward building a domestic quantum ecosystem. In this issue of the newsletter, we will highlight the most important events along with the timeline of 2022 as well as the Libyan impact on the region.
Workshops; Talks; Interviews
QLibya team organizing the QBronze-87 workshop. The workshop was held online on the 15th-20th of July, which let the participants learn the basics of quantum computing and how to write simple quantum programs (click here for more information).
QLibya team organizing the QSilver-12 workshop. The workshop was held online on the July 26-29 of July, is a one-week online workshop on quantum computing and programming based on the intermediate material Silver prepared by QWorld. The scope of the QSilver workshop covers complex numbers and Bloch sphere, Quantum Fourier Transform and Shor’s Algorithm. (click here for more information).
I was honored to be invited by one of the hosts Eng. Mourad Bourghan so speak about the quantum computing and its impact on our day to day lives. The conversation was held live on the University of Tripoli FM radio ( 101.7 FM صوت الجامعة) .
Throughout the discussion, Eng. Mourad asked many important questions, some of them are:
1. What is Quantum Transformation (QX), and how can we act towards it?
2. What is the estimation for the time that Quantum Computing will be commercialized on a large scale?
3. How can the Libyan organizations and the ICT sector be prepared for this era?
In celebration of the National Technology Day (NTD) i was glad to spread the word about the future of the emerging cloud model Quantum-Computing-as-a-Service (QCaaS) in two big on-site events.
The 1st talk is within the program organized by Student Union of the College of Electronics Technology, and the 2nd talk will be hosted by the NTD organizing committee under the program “Developers Summit”.
As part of celebrating the African Union Day under the theme 2022: The Year of Nutrition, Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent; OneQuantum Africa (OQA) held Africa’s Quantum Strides exciting event with great African panelists and speakers being Mainza Kangombe, Gemma Dawson, Conrad Haupt, Malak Elghriani (QLibya member). Making it one of the greatest African quantum events in 2022.
Too many takeaways, too many obstacles were pointed how to tackle, with great 75 participants being from around the globe. You can watch the recording here.
I was honored to be invited as the Co-Founder of Quanta-ly by the IEEE University of Tripoli Student Branch to join the "Global IEEE Smart Cities week 2022" online event on the 25th of March.
From the quantum business perspective, along with the global quantum vision, I have addressed some of the most pressing issues in the MENA region ecosystem:
Why is Quanta-ly's team is pushing the limits to create the Quantum Transformation (QX) strategic plans for diverse industries.
How soon quantum technologies will disrupt the MENA ICT industry?
The event is part of worldwide event series, being dedicated to both exciting new technologies & applications and experts perspectives on current and future smart cities solutions.
Newsletters
I had the honour of writing about the development of the Libyan quantum community in the latest issue of the African Physics Newsletter (APN) under the American Physical Society (APS Physics) efforts. Click here to check the issue.
This is considered as the first Libyan participation in the newsletter. All thanks to Prof. Mourad Telmini for his unlimited support and giving me this opportunity to show the world that African nations are striving not to lag behind the second quantum revolution.
Events & Expos
As part of seeking quantum literacy relentlessly in the Libyan tech ecosystem, it has been a pleasure to have the opportunity to be part of the tenth edition of the Libya
International Information and Communication Technology Exhibition "TAQNYA EXPO 2022".
This year we have merged the efforts of OneQuantum Libya and QLibya with our partner IEEE University of Tripoli Student Branch. A venture partnership that pushed the limits in the Libyan tech ecosystem, made huge quantum impact by meeting with all enthusiasts, having great and insightful quantum discussions business leaders and government officials.
Change-making; Impact
Back in September, i was listed amongst the change makers in Libya by the SDG Startups and Funds which is a platform that brings together all the great minds working on UN SDG goals all over the world & Investors, grants and funding.
The current work i'm conducting includes quantum strategizing, frameworking, policy making which is still in its primitive steps, a lot need to be done to uplift the Libyan ICT sector and changing the ecosystem to be industry-powered rather consuming-mindset.As part of storytelling the OneQuantum impact on communities and what the organization is doing and how it changes lives – through the fantastic and inspirational quantum community leaders. I have shared my vision and mission being part of this great platform.
OneQuantum Libya 1st anniversary; 2022 marks our huge impact on the community. Here are some of our KPI's:
Having just below 500 newsletter subscribers, with reachability to thousands of enthusiasts globally.
Releasing 9 newsletters, some are discussing the most pressing challenges to implement quantum transformation and forging the regional quantum ecosystem.
Over +2,000 total newsletters reads through out various social media platforms and emails!
I was honored to be mentioned by Brian Lenahan in his recent book Quantum Excellence (a must to read) in which he shares insights from global experts on quantum technologies and how they are being deployed by leading companies.. Brian is the founder & chair of the Quantum Strategy Institute. Brian is also the author of Quantum Boost, a book released in 2021.
